About Kate

I’m always at a bit of a loss how what to put “About Me” on a page like this.  I guess we can start with the fact I’m just me.  I can’t promise that what you see is what you get, however. I’m a diplomat at heart and likely my worst fault is that I’m constantly trying to create win-win situations where no one gets hurt, ignoring the fact that isn’t possible much of the time.

Now we can get into labels…

I’m a wife to a fantastic husband and father. We haven’t been married that long, but he feels like home to me. We’ve been through an inordinate amount of negative junk in a very short amount of time, but always manage to keep our sense of humor about life and an intimate bond that somehow transcends whatever is swirling around us at the moment.

I’m a mom to three and stepmom to one. Learning how to manage a preschooler, a terrible twos, and an infant, as well as a part-time household member, elementary school aged child is a bit of a challenge at times. The older three are boys and I finally have my little girl!

I’m a daughter. I’m the adopted daughter (or just daughter) to two great parents. My mom is one of the most caring people on the planet and my dad one of the most patient. I’m the biological daughter to one very cool mother whom I have had the awesome blessing of getting to know, along with my two-half sisters. I’m also the fortunate spawn of a biological father who, while deceased, gave me an aunt, many half-siblings and a whole other side of me to explore.

I’m a friend. While I have had some wonderful friends throughout my life, recently I’ve come into contact with so many “bosom buddies.” Some are younger, some are older, but all are the best people a woman could hope to find in  her life.

Other random facts… I’m an empath meaning that I feel you…literally. I’m a highly-sensitive person as well. I have random bits of synethesia. Mine comes in the form of perceiving some music notes as colors, words as colors, numbers as colors and other random things like fonts and words having a personality. I guess its some “glitch” in my brain, but a glitch that I love having. I also see people as colors.  I’ll probably explore some of these things on occasion. I am neither right brain nor left brain dominate. I perform just as well in math, sciences, and logic as I do in history, writing and other creative explorations. I can keep track of details and see big picture concepts. While all of this sounds grand, I’m not exactly specialized in one area, however, and it creates its own unique set of frustrations. I’m a self-proclaimed perfectionist with myself. I was THAT GIRL who was unhappy with a B. To this day, I’ve never received anything lower than a B- for a final grade. I’m also considered ambidextrous. I write with my right hand, but my left hand writing is actually better than most people’s with their dominate hand. I perform a wide variety of tasks with my left hand, like eating.

My connection to music is deep and profound. I had the amazing experience of singing with national and world-renowned vocal ensembles. I’ve traveled all over Europe with my college choir. I’m slowly getting back into singing at church. I’ve missed it. The years I haven’t sung are years that I feel like I was missing a part of my soul. You’ll occasionally find me listening to a few of the latest pop songs, but more than likely you’ll hear lots of random things coming from my speakers. I enjoy everything from Classical to contemporary instruments, jazz to soul, adult contemporary to musicals, and everything in-between.  Some of the ones I list on my Facebook include Damian Rice, Yiruma, The Killers, Fiona Apple, The Goo-Goo Dolls, Smashing Pumpkins, Norah Jones, Collective Soul, Michael Buble, Crystal Method, Imogen Heap, Amy Grand, Eve 6, Sarah Brightman, Sarah McLaughlin, St. Germain, Lara Fabian, Madeline Peyroux, and many more. I love Bach, Chopin and Rachmaninoff.  I’m constantly on the prowl for interesting artists and songs that stir my soul. Favorite movies include the original Star Wars series, Braveheart, LOTR trilogy, The Sound of Music, Anne of Green Gables, Office Space, Notting Hill and plenty more I can’t think of right this second. I rarely have the time to watch TV, but when I do, its The Mentalist, Criminal Minds, Glee, and American Idol. Glee and American Idol are my guilty pleasures and return to my glory days of singing including flashing “jazz hands” with a show choir.

I am passionate about many other things including phenomenal food be it simple and country to gourmet, singing, piano, writing, exploring nature, wine, swimming, horseback riding, reading, learning, logic, creative pursuits, parenting methods, God, Christianity, A Cappella and chamber music, attending random recitals and readings, philosophizing, engaging strangers in random conversation, photography, music therapy, and realizing that life is so much more than me and anything I can imagine.

I hope you enjoy reading some of the random things that I think about and want to share with others:-)
